Siemens Corporate Research, Inc. (SCR) is the U.S. laboratory of Siemens AG's Corporate Technology organization. It is one of four corporate R&D centers worldwide, and serves as an advanced technology resource in selected areas of R&D for both U.S. operating companies and companies worldwide. After first calling upon PInG to design and develop its original Web site, SCR turned to PInG two years later to design and develop a new corporate Web site.

Challenge

SCR mandated that the new Web site convey the message that SCR was a progressive and innovative research organization. As such, the redesigned Web site had to be fresh and vibrant in order to better promote SCR's research services to new and prospective clients and to enhance the company's on-line image for both business development and recruiting purposes. SCR also required that the redesign be exceptionally interactive, include multimedia elements, and be easy to maintain. This was especially challenging considering that SCR established and maintains the Center for User Interface Design and, thus, is an arbiter of effective and efficient user interfaces.

Solutions

PInG redesigned the SCR Web site utilizing a unique hybrid of Flash technology and HTML. Flash was used to present an interactive Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the Web site, and audio was integrated into the production to enhance users' experience when visiting the Web site. Standardized HTML templates and style sheets were utilized to provide the means by which non-technical SCR staff could easily maintain the Web site content.

Results

The redesign provided SCR with a Web site that had a fresh and timely "look and feel" through the use of Flash technology -- which is one of the latest trends in Web graphics. PInG also satisfied SCR's goal of including multimedia elements and ease of maintenance, as well as SCR's high expectations regarding the user interface design. PInG's efforts resulted in the "new" SCR Web site being awarded a 2001 ASTRA Award for design excellence by the New Jersey Communications, Advertising, and Marketing Association.
