New Jersey Transit -- Web Site Redesign

Company Profile

New Jersey Transit (NJT) is New Jersey's public transportation corporation whose mission is to provide safe, reliable, convenient and cost-effective transit service. Covering a service area of 5,325 square miles, NJT is the nation's third largest provider of bus, rail and light rail transit - linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. The agency's fleet of 1,900 buses and 591 trains serves more than 321,000 customers, making more than 632,000 trips daily, 188 million passenger trips annually, and travels more than one billion miles each year.

Challenge

NJT expressed to PInG its vision and desire to redirect its services towards being more personalized to address the needs of its customers and to promote NJT as a more "personal" transit system as compared to the traditional mindset of "mass" transit. The mission team was challenged with not only developing a strategy that would support NJT's vision and enhance their customer's experience, but at the same time, avoid the "paralysis by analysis" syndrome in the execution of their digital strategy initiative.

Solutions

PInG conducted in-depth Discovery Sessions and an associated Requirements Analysis, the results of which established strategic design, development and implementation criteria for the NJT Digital Strategy. Armed with a solid blueprint, PInG then executed the Web development including creative design, content development, and all back-office application development, such as various e-commerce purchase transactions, content management systems, interactive itinerary planning and schedules, a wireless travelers advisory notification feature and a personalized traveler information center known as "My Transit."

Results

PInG completed an award-winning redesign of the NJT Web site, which resulted in (1) providing NJT users/customers with a personalized, complete solution for easy and efficient access to NJT information and services, and (2) serving as an example of the application of Internet technology innovation and design to the transportation industry in a timely and efficient manner, mirroring NJT's success as one of the most efficient providers of large-scale public transportation solutions. This redesigned Web site won a 2001 Gold Jasper Award from the Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Association (JSPRAA), a 2001 Bronze International Galaxy Award and a 2001 Special Honors Interactivity BIZi Award.
